Salubrious House St.Ives Cornwall Staycation

Salubrious – The meaning; adj –promoting health and wellbeing, synoms – good for you, healthy, wholesome, conducive to or characteristic of physical or moral wellbeing.

A true jewel in St. Ives Crown! A unique house, the only holiday staycation property that is a detached house with the largest garden and private parking spaces in the centre of St Ives that is just steps away from Fore Street and the beaches through the garden gate – A true oasis.

Originally built for the Mayor of St. Ives in 1812, it is positioned on the isthmus of land separating the harbour from Porthmeor Beach and is featured in many paintings and photographs. What views! From the windows and terraces it feels like you are looking out at a painting encircled by views across all of St Ives and beaches from Porthmeor, The Harbour, Porthminster, and Godrevey Lighthouse stretching over to Porthkidney Sands sweeping across all of St. Ives Bay. Home to a number of resident artists throughout the years including Douglas Portway, Edgar Skinner and Fred Bottomley.

Salubrious House was central to the St. Ives artists community in its heyday and it was the party house, frequently visited by Terry Frost, Bernard Leach, Ben Nicholson, Barbour Hepworth et all, sipping gin Rickey’s on the terrace. Wilhelmina Barns-Graham’s illustration ‘St. Ives from Salubrious House’ of 1968 was created from a first floor window. We are grateful that the Wilhelmina Barns – Graham museum trust donated a copy of the illustration, which is framed and hangs next to the window where she sat and created the work of art.

Following the purchase of the property in the Autumn of 2019, a full renovation and refurbishment was undertaken, bringing the house up to luxury standard whilst retaining the character. The house has been designed with a beach house vibe, with swathes of Bleached wood, Natural linens and textures with splashes of gold accents. Accessories are unusual and original making it feel like home rather than a holiday home. The house offers reverse level accommodation to make the best of the views, focusing on the huge first floor open plan kitchen / dining / living room. Whether you are holidaying with your family or friends, this is the social hub, with a bespoke dining table to gather and eat whilst taking in the incredible views, partaking in sun-downers on the adjoining first floor terrace before dinner is served.

The refurbished studio in the garden is also steeped in artistic history. A photograph of Douglas Portway in the studio now hangs in the National Portrait Gallery, but now houses a library / reading room, with comfy sofa and wood burner. There is also a shower room for returning from the beach and a small kitchen area with fridge for chilling the wine before settling in and escaping with a book.

There are private parking spaces for 2 large cars on our own block paved car park approx 50 metres from the house, which was a non negotiable criteria when purchasing a property in St. Ives.

Salubrious House in St.Ives

Winner of a showcase of National Awards and voted one of the 10 best European destinations compiled by trip advisor, St. Ives is a sub-tropical oasis where the beaches are golden, the vegetation is lush, and the light piercingly bright. It has an oceanic climate with some of the mildest winters and warmest summers in Northern Europe, giving a unique atmosphere with a Mediterranean feel. The town itself is a picturesque mix of all the essential ingredients that go together to create a truly magnificent holiday destination. The Tate St. Ives is the leading act, with a supporting cast of world class seafood restaurants, resident artists, tangled streets with bizarre names, honey-coloured granite cottages, walk in galleries, markets and atmospheric pubs.

The town has five beaches – Porthmeor the surfing beach, Porthgwidden a small sandy cove, two harbour beaches, one of which is a working port and Porthminster a sunbathing and swimming beach which has almost half a mile of fine golden sand.

St. Ives isn’t just for Summer holidays. Out of Season it is still a bustling town, with all the shops, galleries and restaurants remaining open. An opportunity to enjoy the many walks and sight-seeing. During the Christmas and New Year period the streets are lined with decorations and special events take place. Father Christmas arrives on the lifeboat, brass bands play and carol services are scattered around the town. At New Year fireworks and parties are held in the streets, with everyone dressed in fancy dress enjoying the party atmosphere.

Once bitten by St. Ives, people return year after year, mesmerised by the light that will bathe all your photos in a fuzzy glow- #no filter necessary!
